Operations Aligns Leadership Under One KU

In a December email, Chancellor Doug Girod noted that University Cabinet leaders across KU’s campuses were developing plans to align their units and teams as part of the One KU initiative. Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer David Vranicar recently announced a realignment of the Operations units on the Lawrence and KU Medical Center campuses to reflect the One KU model. The highlights of that announcement are outlined below.

Historically, the KU Lawrence and KU Medical Center Operations units have been largely independent of one another. Through the recent realignment, Operations will now be positioned to better serve all campus communities by creating opportunities for efficiencies, development of best practices, increased collaboration, and establishment of consistent policies and procedures across all campuses.

This One KU transformation of Operations begins with the following leadership changes:

  • Callie Long, who has served as Vice Chancellor of Operations for the Lawrence campus, will now oversee Lawrence’s Facilities Planning and Development unit and the KU Medical Center’s Projects and Planning unit, as well as Space Management for all campuses. She reports directly to Vranicar.
  • Joe Pond, Chief of Staff to the Chief Operating Officer, will now oversee those leaders managing Parking and Transportation and Emergency Management for all campuses, the KU Lawrence and KUMC police departments and, in collaboration with Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Human Resources Officer Chari Young, the Medical Center’s Workday Service Center.
  • Ian Saxton, who has served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management for the Medical Center, will oversee Facilities and Operations for all campuses, reporting to Vranicar. Lawrence units under this umbrella include Custodial Services, Facilities Services, and Environment, Health & Safety. Medical Center units include Maintenance and Infrastructure, and Facilities Operations.
  • Kevin Rowald, who has served as Director of Parking and Transportation Services for the Medical Center, will lead Parking and Transportation for all campuses. Kevin will report to Joe Pond.

Operations on both campuses have highly competent staff who bring their skills, professionalism and care to their jobs every day. These changes will place the university in the strongest position to weather the challenges facing higher education and facilitate a much tighter alignment of operations-focused units across the whole university.
